The Primary Election in August decides the major party nominations for the General Election. (I have to make it through the 8/11 Primary in order to run in the General Election.) The General Election in November decides who will represent Orange County in the State Senate. The information that follows provides you with basic information and important voting dates.
WHO CAN VOTE?
What is the Orange County Senate District?
The Orange County Senate District includes the following Orange County towns: Bradford, Brookfield, Chelsea, Corinth, Fairlee, Randolph, Strafford, Topsham, Tunbridge, Vershire, Washington, West Fairlee, and Williamstown.
PRIMARY ELECTION
Tuesday, August 11, 2026
WHAT IS A PRIMARY ELECTION? A primary is how a political party picks its nominee. This August, there are 2 Democrats running for the Orange County Senate seat. You don’t have to belong to a party to vote in its primary, any registered voter can take part. At the polls, you will receive all three major party ballots and choose one to cast your vote. Whoever gets the most votes per party in the primary moves on to the general election in November.
Vermont does not automatically mail primary ballots. If you want to vote by mail in the primary, you need to request your ballot. Request your primary ballot online: https://vote.vermont.gov
Ballots become available starting around June 27, 2026.
Last day to request a mailed ballot: Monday, August 10, 2026, by 5 PM or the close of your town clerk’s office.
Return your ballot to your town clerk’s office by close of business the day before the election, or bring it to your polling place by 7 PM on August 11.
Register by Friday, August 7, 2026 to guarantee you’re on the checklist for the primary. You can still register in person through Election Day.

GENERAL ELECTION
Tuesday, November 3, 2026
WHAT IS A GENERAL ELECTION? The general election decides who actually holds the seat. The Democratic nominee from the primary faces the Republican nominee, Progressive nominee, and any independent candidates on the ballot. Every registered voter in Vermont votes on the same ballot, no party required. Whoever gets the most votes in November wins.
Every active registered voter in Vermont is automatically mailed a ballot for the general election. You do not need to request one. Ballots are mailed by October 1, 2026. Expect yours in your mailbox by mid-October.
